Like our colleagues at the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Emergency Department Practice Management Association, Envision Healthcare is concerned that health insurance companies continue to prioritize profits over patients by systematically denying patient claims and refusing to pay clinicians for providing lifesaving care. Health insurers’ tactics of denials and delays in payment contributes to the crushing administrative burden experienced by all clinicians and the ongoing cycle of dysfunction within the U.S. healthcare system. Envision Healthcare supports efforts to hold health insurers accountable for policies that delay, deny or underpay for essential medical care. Physicians are required by law to provide care to patients in the emergency room, as they should be. Why aren’t health insurers required to pay for that care?
